Why AWWA-Certified Metering Is the Only Data Your Utility Will Accept

When a meter is AWWA-certified, it has been tested and documented to meet those standards. The data it produces can be submitted to a utility, used to support a billing adjustment, and relied upon in a revenue audit.

When a meter is not AWWA-certified, none of that is true. The data may be useful for internal purposes (depending on how accurate that meter really is), but it has no standing with the utility.

That distinction is the entire conversation.

Why this matters more than the monitoring technology itself

What most sensor systems won't tell you

There is a second issue with the edge-sensor-only approach that rarely gets discussed.

Edge sensors monitor subpoints. They catch what is leaking at the fixture level. A running toilet, a stuck valve, a fixture left open, a leak under a sink, these are the kinds of issues endpoint sensors are designed to detect.

But a large percentage of water loss in commercial buildings runs through the main meter line. The water that goes somewhere it is not supposed to go before it ever reaches an endpoint. The leak in the main. The cracked pipe. The irrigation bleed... or the in-pipe leaks that go unnoticed. The unaccounted-for consumption that adds up across an entire building.

Endpoint sensors do not see any of that. They only see what happens after the water reaches a subpoint.

Do you want data that you can rely upon, and that your utility will accept?

If the answer is yes, the system has to be built on AWWA-certified metering. There is no other path to that outcome.

If the answer is no, and you are only looking for internal leak alerts at the fixture level, an edge sensor system is a reasonable option. Just do not expect to find everything, or for your utility to credit you for the data you are collecting.

The difference between those two outcomes is not a pricing decision. It is a product decision.
